French Colors for Kids: Vocabulary + 2 Fun Activities to Practice Every Day

Learning French colors is one of the best starting points for young learners. The words are short, easy to remember, and you can practice them anywhere, no textbook needed.

Here are the essential French colors your child needs to know at ages 6 to 9.

Native Teacher Tip

After 10 years of teaching French to young learners, I can tell you: rouge, bleu and jaune click almost instantly. Marron takes longer, kids often mix it up with noir at first. That is completely normal. Repetition in context is what makes it stick, not drilling the list.

Which brings me to the two activities I use most with this age group.

Activity 1: Find It Fast (at home)

This one works anywhere in the house and takes less than 5 minutes.

The adult says a full sentence: “I want something red” or even better, say it in French: “Je veux quelque chose de rouge!”

Your child has 10 seconds to find and bring back an object that matches. A red crayon, a red cup, a red book, anything works.

The game keeps their brain actively connecting the word to real objects, which is far more effective than reading a list. You can reverse it too: they find the object, you have to say the color in French first.

Activity 2: The Car Game (on the go)

This one is perfect for the school run or any car journey.

Before you start, agree on 3 colors to look out for. Limiting it to 3 at a time keeps it manageable for beginners, once your child is confident, you can add more.

Then the rule is simple: every time someone spots one of those cars, they call it out in French first.

“Voiture rouge!” — red car.
“Voiture bleue!” — blue car.
“Voiture jaune!” — yellow car.

First player to reach 10 points wins.

No materials. No prep. Just French happening naturally in your day.
